Metro Testing & Engineering is looking for a hard-working, motivated, and responsible Civil/Geotechnical/Environmental Engineer-In-Training or Junior Engineer to join our dynamic team Burnaby/Abbotsford, BC. You will support the geotechnical engineering and materials testing needs for the Metro Vancouver and Fraser Valley regions.

You will have the opportunity to gain experience in a variety of industries (such as residential, commercial, industrial, oil & gas, and infrastructure).

Metro Testing & Engineering Ltd is one of the largest Materials testing companies in BC and our goal is to grow the Geotechnical and Environmental Engineering divisions. We deliver the service, support, and solutions to our clients’ construction projects in the residential/commercial/industrial, oil-and-gas, mining, and infrastructure market sectors. We continue to work hard at being the first choice in materials testing and engineering for our clients.
We currently have offices in Ft. St. John, Prince Rupert, Terrace, Edmonton, Kamloops, Salmon Arm, Abbotsford, Surrey, Burnaby, Squamish, and Victoria, and aim to continue growing. The main business of Metro is construction materials testing with growing geotechnical and environmental engineering divisions.

Project types and Engineering challenges:

  • Primary soils in the Lower Mainland region are Glacial in nature with glacial till in the higher regions and alluvial soils from the Fraser River common in the low-lying areas.
  • Projects currently range from construction of a variety of building sizes, municipal infrastructure, transportation, slope stability evaluations, liquefaction assessments, and the door is open to diversifying our work. Many of our projects start with the project site plan, the geotechnical drilling investigation and reporting, followed by reviewing the completed design, and then monitoring during construction as the Engineers of Record.
  • Our work ranges across BC and Alberta with a focus on the Lower Mainland

What you will be doing

Ideal candidates have these skills; however, we are looking for a team member that has a learning mindset and willingness to learn and grow into the role.

  • Conduct geotechnical field investigations and monitor construction activities
  • Perform field and lab testing to determine material properties
  • Analyze data and prepare recommendations and reports for projects relating to shallow and deep foundation design, road structure design, earthworks, etc.
  • Prepare and review geotechnical project proposals
  • Develop and manage professional relationships with clients and field personnel
  • Review materials testing reports and work with Metro’s technicians/technologists on site
  • Read, review, and understand construction drawings for conformance to geotechnical recommendations
  • Support the Environmental team as needed
  • Actively contribute to engineering discussions, attend training workshops, and work with Metro’s team of engineers
  • Willing to work weekends and overtime as needed, as well as drive long distances and occasionally work at remote sites (Weekend and overtime work is usually during the summer when we need to monitor construction activities that are occurring during the weekend, we work as a team to spread out this work)
  • Trouble shooting real time problems in the field with assistance from the engineering team.

Who we are looking for:

  • Bachelors Degree in Civil, Geotechnical, or Environmental Engineering or equivalent disciplines (new graduates welcome)
  • Registered or eligible for registration with EGBC as an Engineer-In-Training
  • Valid Canadian Driver’s License with relatively clean driver’s abstract
  • Physically fit – must be able to lift 50 lbs and walk long distance
  • Great computer skills (Word/Excel) with the ability to learn new software quickly
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to develop and maintain positive professional relationships

Skills and experence that will give you bonus points

  • Valid CCIL certification and valid safety tickets
  • Mechanical aptitude
  • Previous experience in materials testing/ geotechnical engineering
  • Previous experience with gINT, pile design software, slope analysis, and AutoCAD software
  • Previous experience with retaining wall design and slope stability assessments
  • Experience with PDA testing

Compensation

$26.00 - $30.00 per hour
